Scented Candles in India, Hand-Poured the Slow Way

Flickermelt is an independent Indian candle studio building a small, considered range of scented soy candles for homes that pay attention to the little things. Every jar is poured in batches of a few dozen so the fragrance, the colour and the burn are exactly as we want them — not exactly as a factory line allows.

Clean soy wax

Food-grade soy from Indian and US farms — no paraffin, no petroleum residue, no soot stains on your walls.

Skin-safe fragrance

Phthalate-free oils blended to IFRA standards so the scent throw is rich without being chemical or headache-inducing.

Long, even burn

Cotton wicks sized to the jar so the wax pools evenly and you use every gram you paid for.

Why a scented candle changes the feel of an Indian home

Indian homes carry a lot of life. Cooking smells from a busy kitchen, the dust that drifts in through monsoon windows, the agarbatti from morning prayers and the takeaway boxes from a late office night — they all leave a memory in the air. A good scented candle does not cover any of this. It sits on top of it, quietly, and reframes the room around something warmer.

We started Flickermelt in 2022 because most of the candles we found in India were either gift-shop novelties with weak scent throw or imported jars that cost more than the cab ride home. We wanted a third option: a candle that was clearly made by hand, that smelled honest, that lasted the whole quarter and that was priced like an Indian product, not a duty-paid import.

Today every candle we ship is hand-poured in our Indore studio. We blend the fragrance ourselves, cure the wax for at least seven days before sale so the scent has time to bind, and test-burn every batch in a normal living room before it reaches yours. None of this is fast. It is the reason customers keep coming back.

How we choose the fragrances

Scent is personal but it is not random. We build our fragrance library around three families that have proven themselves in Indian homes: gourmand notes that read as comfort — coffee, vanilla bean, caramel, dark chocolate; classic florals and woods that suit our climate — jasmine, rose, sandalwood, oudh, vetiver; and bright top notes that lift a humid room — lemongrass, bergamot, sea salt, green tea.

Each fragrance is composed of a top, heart and base. The top is what you smell when you open the lid. The heart is what fills the room within twenty minutes of lighting. The base is what stays on the cushions hours after the flame is out. A candle that only does the top note is what most factory candles smell like — strong out of the box, gone in an hour. We blend for the base.

We also keep India's seasons in mind. Our winter blends lean spicier and heavier. Our monsoon blends carry more citrus and herbal greens to cut the damp. Summer leans clean — sandalwood, white tea, fig. You will often see a small note on the product page recommending when in the year a fragrance feels most alive.

Soy wax, cotton wicks, glass that gets a second life

Every candle in this collection is made with 100% soy wax. Soy is plant-derived, biodegradable, burns cooler than paraffin and does not release the dark soot that paraffin candles leave on walls and ceilings. Cooler burn also means a longer life — a 200 g soy candle will typically out-burn a 200 g paraffin candle by a clear margin.

Our wicks are pure cotton with a paper core for stability. We size the wick to the jar diameter so the wax forms a full pool from edge to edge by the time you blow it out. A correctly sized wick is the single biggest factor in a candle that lasts and a candle that tunnels.

The jars are heat-tempered glass, designed to be washed and reused after the candle is done. Many customers tell us they keep ours as small planters, brush holders, bedside vessels for jewellery. We like that. A candle should not become landfill once the wick is gone.

How to get the most out of your candle

Three small habits make a real difference. First, on the very first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar before you put it out. This usually takes between an hour and two. Soy has memory — if you blow it out before the pool is full, every future burn will tunnel down the centre and waste wax along the sides.

Second, keep the wick trimmed to about 5 mm before every light. A long wick mushrooms, smokes and shortens the candle's life. A pair of nail scissors is fine.

Third, give the candle a quiet, draft-free spot. A flickering flame from a draft is romantic on Instagram and bad in real life — it burns unevenly, throws less fragrance and shortens the burn.

Where to use a scented candle in your home

The living room is the obvious place — a single jar on the coffee table will scent a 200 to 300 square foot room within twenty minutes. Bedrooms reward softer fragrances like vanilla, lavender or sandalwood because the scent lingers in the sheets. Bathrooms benefit from citrus and eucalyptus around bath time.

Home offices and study desks are the underrated ones. A clean, focused fragrance like rosemary, lemongrass or fresh coffee on a corner of the desk genuinely changes how a long workday feels. We hear this often from designers, writers and students who keep one going through deadlines.

If you are gifting, think about the recipient's space, not just their taste. A studio apartment needs something lighter than a four-bedroom villa. A new parent needs something soft and clean. A bachelor's flat can handle the bigger oud and tobacco notes most homes find too heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Flickermelt scented candles made in India?
Yes. Every Flickermelt candle is hand-poured by our small team in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. We blend the fragrances, pour the wax, trim the wicks and pack each jar ourselves so you receive a product that is genuinely Indian-made and not imported and re-labelled.
How long does a Flickermelt scented candle burn?
Burn time depends on jar size and how you care for the candle. Our standard 200 g soy wax jars give roughly 35 to 45 hours of fragrant burn when you keep the wick trimmed to 5 mm and allow a full melt pool on the first light.
Which scents are popular with Indian homes?
Warm gourmand notes like coffee, vanilla and caramel work beautifully through monsoon and winter, while citrus, jasmine, sandalwood and oudh stay popular all year. Coastal cities lean toward fresh and floral; northern winters welcome amber, tobacco and spiced wood.
Are scented candles safe to burn indoors?
Our candles use food-grade soy wax, cotton wicks and skin-safe fragrance oils that meet international IFRA standards. Burn on a heat-resistant surface, keep away from drafts and children, and never leave a lit candle unattended.
Do you ship scented candles all over India?
Yes. We ship pan-India with insulated packaging that protects the wax through summer heat. Most metros receive orders within three to five working days, and we offer cash on delivery on eligible pin codes.
What is the difference between scented candles and aroma diffusers?
A scented candle gives you fragrance plus the soft warmth of a real flame, which most people find calming after a long day. A diffuser disperses oil into the air without a flame. Many of our customers use both — a diffuser through the workday and a candle in the evening.
